The appeal of ya’s mysterious presentation lies in the album’s gloomy, effortless vocals and the dizzying mix of blues, pop and alternative instrumentals. The title track “CHANGE UR BODY” urges the listener to embrace transformation and introduces ideas of pantheism which are also present in Vision “I am Allen, I am John, I am Kerouac and Monroe”; ya believes in the “genderless, globalized & unified future”.
Yet, she reflects on the fight of change versus comfort in her first ever pop track “Movie” and “Je le jure”; drunken, desperate and love seeking love ballad “I don’t want to change, I just want to dance”. ya invites the listeners further into her soul, in raw singing of “Stare at me one more time and I will shoot you” which deals with being perceived and judged. With the wide range of stylistic choices in “Change Your Body”, ya wants us to know one thing for certain; destroy the labels, “Don’t let me be defined”.
